During Intel Developer Forum in Beijing Intel has revealed that it will launch a new enthusiast platform in 2007 and that it is expected to become the chip giant’s answer to AMD Quad FX. Intel has named the new enthusiast platform Skulltrail and just like AMD it will be a dual-socket system with two Core-based processors. Exactly which architecture that will be used and how it will solve the actual motherboard platform remains to be seen, but it’s already certain that there will be room for up to four PCIe X16 graphics cards.

The launch of AMD Quad FX wasn’t exactly the most impressive we’ve seen and the reception was rather cold. Mainly because of the high power consumption and heat dissipation, which makes Intel’s equivalent even more interesting. We should not forget that AMD will update its Quad FX platform with the Barcelona architecture later this year.
