According American Technology Research Intel will shortly unveil its x86-64 CPU. They also say it will take them at least a year to get the surrounding infrastructure in form of mainboards, chipsets and such supporting such a processor. This would leave the whole of 2004 open for AMD and it’s Athlon64 line that is currently in production. What is left in the open is whether Intels implementation of x86-64 will be compatible with AMD’s excisting one, and how it will impact AMD’s sales in the 64 bit market. Some customers might opt to wait for Intels 64 bit desktop chip instead of going with an AMD solution.
