During the first quarter of 2008 Intel will start to phase out its single-core processors by launching a new budget series of processors called Celeron E1000. This information was leaked from PC builders recently. They also said that the first model will be the Celeron E1200, and that it will have a 1.6 GHz clock frequency, 800MHz FSB, and 512 KB L2 cache. This processor will cost $53 USD (1Ku) and really shows there simply isn’t any room left for single-core processors. Intel’s 45nm technology will have started to take over when the Celeron E1000 series arrives, but these new entry models will be based on the older 65nm technology, as it is simply a cut-down Conroe core. About the same time we should see the arrival of two new 45nm processors in the E4000 series.
The E4700 model will be clocked at 2.6 GHz with 800MHz FSB and 2MB L2 cache, while the second model, not yet named, will get a 1066 MHz FSB and 3 MB L2 cache. The price of E4700 is expected to be around $133 USD.
