Intel V8 is a direct reply to AMD’s Quad-FX platform, where it’s all about multithreading performance. Even if AMD markets Quad FX as an enthusiast platform it is hardly the best system for those who are looking for gaming performance, or something similar. Intel V8 is based a lot of server technology, including FB-DIMMs, which makes it a very close relative to the workstation. Over at TechReport they’ve now published a review of Intel’s mighty platform. With its dual quad-core processors working at 3.0GHz there is tons of performance to access, with the right multithreaded applications.
TechReport mixes a lot of workstation benchmarks with game tests and the result is pretty clear, Intel V8 is a platform for extremely multithreaded applications. The FB-DIMM memory technology has much worse latencies than DDR and this hurts the performance in intense benchmarks, although there is plenty of memory bandwidth.
Even if Intel V8 is hardly the optimal choice for a gamer, we have one of these babies in our test lab. In the hands of The Human GPS, Intel V8 has gone through some tests and more is coming. We will offer you some more insight and we’re trying to solve so that we can have the system on display during DreamHack Summer 2007.
