Intels Springdale chipset hits the market.

We have known for a while that Intel have been planing on yet another chipset for the new Pentium 4 processor with 800MHz FSB. The new chipset goes under the developing name Springdale although the different models of the chipset is called something with ‘865’. The three chipsets that was launced today are 865P, 865PE and 865G. The differences between them are not that big and for more information you can take a look at the reviews that emerged today.

Speaking of reviews of the Springdale chipset – I’m still a bit confused since none of the publised reviews has gotten any indisputable results.

On Anandtech they have had big problems with the memory timing on the 865 chipset with their Corsair modules, which gives a somewhat negative angel of the 865 chipsets performance. On Tech-report they have used the exact same memory modules but don’t mention any problems. You can however overclock a ABIT BH7 to 800MHz FSB and tests show that it then beats the 865 chipset in several tests despite lower memory bandwidth. Strangely enough that is hardly mentioned in article.

The 845 chipset seems to do quite well since the memory bandwidth is not everything, even OCAddiction gets equal results with their ABIT BH7.

Tomshardware have gotten some fairly strange results as their 865 reference card beats most 875 mainboards.

I don’t mention this to create alot of dissatisfaction, but mainly because to see what you readers think and feel since I myself is in need of advice at the moment. We will shortly investigate this matter ourself, but until then you can read the reviews that is available on the net.
