Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are the technically superior consoles of the current generation of video game consoles, but the advanced hardware comes at a price. The consoles have been sold at a loss and Nintendo has been the only one to make profit on the consoles thanks to its much cheaper Wii console. Whether Microsoft will reduce manufacturing costs enough to make Xbox 360 profitable as a console is uncertain, but according to the latest quarterly report from Microsoft, the Entertainment and Devices Division, which includes the Xbox division, managed to present a profit of $165 million during the first fiscal quarter.
“More importantly from a game industry perspective, Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD), which houses the Xbox business, actually produced a profit of $165 million compared to a loss of $142 million one year ago. Revenue in the Xbox division was also way up (91 percent) to $1.93 billion.”
Once again it’s Halo which has saved the day as the third part of the Halo saga which rounded up $330 million revenue all by itself, which once again proves that the games is what matters.
