New file system in MS new Windows

Microsoft’s new operating system, code-named Longhorn, has leaked onto the web. So far, those having tested it reports about major changes in file management and searching features. These changes have also found their way into the next version of SQL Server, code-named Yukon.
Microsoft are working on a new file system, the WinFS, replacing NTFS and FAT32. Hopefully, hard drive management and efficiency will increase, though the main idea seems to be to make it easier for users to find information, no matter where it is stored or in what form.

“You could do that kind of search with Google on the Web today, it’s sort of ironic Microsoft is only getting to this with Longhorn. XP is way behind in that regard, particularly when you think about how big hard drives are getting. People have lots of data and a legitimate need to search it”, says Michael Silver, Gartner analyst.
