Are you waiting for the Athlon 64? You are not alone, and the hardworking people at AMD zone have put the Opteron 246 to the test to see the overclocking potential of the architecture:
Our goal was to reach at least 2.2GHz and if possible 2.4GHz so that we could mimic the rumored release speeds of the Athlon 64 which by all accounts will be merely a rebadged Opteron initially until the Socket 754 version comes available.
They manage to get it up to 2.25 GHz and the performance is very impressive, beating the 3.2 GHz P4 in almost all tests (most importantly all the game tests, including Quake3 where the P4 traditionally has always beaten the Athlon). Read the article here.
