Radeon HD 2900 Pro has already appeared in stores in some places and when studying the specifications of the “new” card, it seems like a really good bang for the buck. Over at TweakTown they’ve published a review of the card where they compare it to Radeon HD 2900 XT and GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB. The card is overall a little bit slower than 2900 XT and stands up well to the 8800 GTS, but since the only difference is a slightly lower core clock (600 MHz) this is exactly what we expected. Forum user Lightman at XtremeSystems has published some out-of-the-box overclocking with air cooling and was able to reach quite impressive frequencies.
The 2900 Pro has a lower core voltage, which limits the overclocking somewhat, but he still managed to reach 825 MHz stable. This is 75 MHz above the clock of 2900 XT and would be a pretty good overclock for that card too.
Overall The Radeon HD 2900 Pro is probably the card that offers the most performance per dollar you can find today. It costs ~$240 in stores, but it won’t be around for long. The RV670 is just around the corner and will replace it in November.
