X-bit Labs has reviewed the SIS 755, a SIS chipset for the Athlon64 platform. SIS is not really known for making the best chipsets for AMD-system, though their Intel-system chipsets are all the more interesting. They always seem to be able to keep the prices down though, something that has become the most interesting trademark for SIS, keeping performance in second hand.
Then what does the 755 include? I’m sorry to say that SIS hasn’t included a lot of luxurious things in the 755, yet they have included all of true importance such as S-ATA raid, USB2 and DDR400 support. The lack of Firewire support is a bit disappointing. The later can be fixed by the motherboard manufacturers though. Both the K8T800 and the nForce 3 150 pro lacks Firewire support in the southbridge so it isn’t really that remarkable.
There are two rather interesting things about this chipset.
1: HT-buss on 800MHz
2: A buss between the north and southbridge working with 1GHz
These two are improvements when comparing to K8T800 and nForce 3 150 pro which both lacks this. The nForce 3 150 pro utilizes 600MHz on the HT-buss and the K8T800 merely 533MHz between the north and southbridge.
– Does this make the SIS 755 worth noticing?
Yes, X-bit Labs tests shows that it proves to be just as good as nVidia’s nForce 3 150 pro and VIA’s K8T800. Another good function with the SIS 755 is that one can lock the AGP and PCI frequency, opening for overclocking, despite that SIS doesn’t have that good history when it comes to it. But one shouldn’t blame them for this yet, as they might have changed.
