Small form factor HDDs?

We have as of late seen portable media players equipped with small hard disk drives on the market, and thus I chose to find some information about the current status on “mini hard disk drives”, as I’ve come to call them.

Apparently Toshiba, being one of the pioneers in the market, is selling hard drives not larger than 0.9 inches in radius, a rough 4.5 cm, and ranging from 5 mm to 8 mm in height. Of course it isn’t hard to understand that the volume of information which can be saved on these drives are rather restricted, but I was stunned when I saw that these had ranged from 5 to the latest 40 GB creation.

Could this perhaps be useful in laptops together with Wafer technology memory to bring down heat generation and power consumption?

I also found some information of Toshibas plans for the future, bringing forth a mini disk drive not larger than 0.42 inch in radius, a rough 1.1 cm.

If you want to find out a little more about the 0.42 inch drive then you can click here.
