AMD seems to have heard the complaints from the enthusiasts community and will release FX processors for single CPU systems in the future. Quadfather (4×4) will still be around, but will get their own series of FX processors. The “single-CPU” FX processors will be using the AM2+ platform and will have the same compatibility as the other processors, which means that they will work with current AM2 motherboards through a simple BIOS update. The specifications looks a bit like the rest as well with 512KB L2 cache per core and a large L3 cache at 2MB, and the beauty of it all; an unlocked multiplier. The speed will be in the top range of the Phenom series, which seems to be 2.4 GHz right now. The name will be FX-80 and the processor will arrive during the first quarter of 2008..
