AMD is preparing the launch of its first hexa-core retail CPU, code-named Thuban, which is expected to launch as Phenom II X6. It looks like we have it confirmed that the first six-shooter from AMD will be called Phenom II X6 1000T and launch in Q2 containing three different models.
At ATI-forum they have published a roadmap for the Phenom II X6 1000 series where we can see Phenom II X6 1075T, Phenom II X6 1055T and Phenom II X6 1035T.
The processors will be made with 45 nanometer technology and ship with 9MB total cache. Even if the clock frequencies weren’t revealed AMD has a new dynamic turbo function, much like Intel Turbo Boost, for increasing the clock frequency with active cores while idle cores are deactivated. All to optimize performance per watt.
The power consumption is extra interesting as AMD has managed to stay within the 125W TDP envelope. The entry model 1035T is even better with only 95W TDP.
Intel just released the first hexa-core retail processor in the form of Core i7 980X Extreme Edition. The processor is in our lab and something truly awesome in terms of performance. We’re working on the last quirks before the review will be posted, but its coming. Phenom II X6 1000 series will most likely not be able to match Intel here, but we still look forward to the first benchmarks and not the least prices of AMD’s first hexa-core processors.
