Uruguay is one of the countries that are evaluating different budget laptops for its school systems and this seemingly small market that has been dominated by Nicholas Negroponte and his One Laptop Per Child project, has expanded quite a lot recently. And recently Intel decided to get in the game with a ultra-budget laptop of its own, Classmate PC. Both of these have now been evaluated by LATU Uruguay, the organ that evaluates the systems, and the winner was the One Laptop Per Child XO. XO-1 got a score of 56.84 while Classmate PC scored 53.06 points.
“Now the findings are not official yet, as all the bidders have five days to contest the process, but this is a stunning upset for Intel and a resounding confirmation for OLPC. LATU will be purchasing 100,000 laptops for children, with an option to buy 50,000 more, at $199 per laptop.”
The lower price of the XO system is said to have been the decisive factor of the evaluation, which means that students in Uruguay get a One Laptop Per Child XO computer pretty soon. Some have already had the opportunity to test them. The results aren’t official yet, but expect an announcement soon.
