The specification for the wireless USB interface WUSB has reached version 1.1 and units that use the standard will now be capable of speeds up to 200 Mbps at 10 meters range, but at closer range the technology will be capable of speeds like USB 2.0, around 480 Mbps.
Wireles USB 1.1 specifies that all products made with the technology will be capable of at least 200 Mbps, higher speeds is no requirement, but is in the specification. WUSB can from now also operate over higher frequency bands, 6 GHz or higher and will also bring power saving functions. This should noticeably improve power consumption both when idle and during load.
Wireless USB will preserve the functionality of wired USB while also unwiring the cable connection and providing enhanced support for streaming media CE devices and peripherals.
So far Wireless USB is still far from common and whether the new specification will change that remains to be seen. Behind the format we have a solid group of PC companies; Hewlett-Packard, Intel, LSI, Microsoft, NEC, Samsung and ST-Ericsson.
