Xbox 360 gets a much quieter DVD player

Everyone who owns a Xbox 360 knows that the video game console is far from quiet and there are two things causing this. Relatively loud fans for cooling the advanced and hot components and an unnecessarily loud DVD player, which certainly isn’t fun to hear when it revs up. Microsoft is working on a 65nm process for these, which would reduce the need for cooling, but it seems that Microsoft has already decided to silence the DVD player by simply swapping it for a new one.

It has replaced the current models from Toshiba-Samsung and Hitachi-LG, with a BenQ unit and the new player will according to users be a lot quieter. Those who’ve already bought an Xbox 360 simply have to hope (?) for it to break down and be sent in for repair, as Microsoft nowadays uses the BenQ player to replace broken players.

“From alot of play time on this new drive, I can tell everyone that this drive is SUPER QUIET. You still hear the drive spin very fast, but when the game is constantly loading data it’s nearly inaudible. I have been sitting very close to my 360 to try and determine how the drive sounds and behaves, and IMO it’s alot better than the SAMSUNG and Hitachi in nearly every aspect of operation.”
