NVIDIA has two active series of graphics cards, GeForce GTX for the performance segment and GeForce 9 for the low and mid-range. Closest to the performance segment is GeForce 9800GTX+ and it may not be all that easy to estimate which card is the fastest when the names are so different. NVIDIA has been struggling to get this right and has therefore decided to rebrand the GeForce 9 series something more fitting, something we heard for the first time months ago.

GeForce 9800GTX+ will apparently be renamed GeForce GTS 250 GeForce 9800GT will become GeForce GTS 240. All to fall in line with the more powerful GeForce GTX models.

Beyond the name change nothing new will be introduced according to the source. NVIDIA has sent out the following text to partners;

“GeForce GTS 250 carries over the same specs and features of 9800 GTX+, and hence the same GPU, memory, board, PCB, and thermal solution. AIC’s should be confident in purchasing GPU’s, PCB’s, and other materials, since the only change is a new VBIOS to implement the new branding”

The “new” cards will be announced at CeBIT next month.
