Linux has always been a cheaper alternative than Windows, mainly because it can be downloaded for free. Now it has appeared a new survey that wanted to findout about the differences in TCO (Total Cost of Operation) between Linux, Windows and Solaris. They have taken all apsects into consideration for period of three years, everything from softare licensing to purchase of new hardware and maintenance. The systems used had a performance of 100 000 operations per second (SPECjbb). The conclusion was that a Linux-system costs 40% less than the Windows-equivalent. Despite that the differences have shrunk over the years there are still a lot of money to save by chosing Linux over Windows for companies.
