Memory manufacturer Micron is, despite being the third largest company of its type, not pleased. The RAM market is quite strained and it has now started to look for other solutions, the answer seems to be graphics cards. Micron is said to prepare launching DDR3 memories at speeds beyond 1600MHz and hopes to attract both AMD and NVIDIA.

The memory chips will be made using Micron’s new 50nm technology and the different from regular GDDR3 is that Micron’s DDR3 chips use considerably lower voltage, 1.35V compared to 1.8V.

All the talk about energy efficient computers and components means this move is in phase with both how graphics card makers and consumers think, but if it is enough to allow Micron to grab a larger portion of the graphic memory market remains to be seen.

The clock frequencies aside there is no information on the performance of Micron’s new DDR3 chips, but most likely they perform at a similar performance/clock like the GDDR3 chips already available.
