New numbers from survey company NDP shows that a whopping 96 percent of all netbooks run Windows for operating system. This is a great change from when the netbooks first launched Linux dominated completely, with 90% of the netbook market. The exact reason for the surprisingly large change is up for speculation, which is also something Microsoft has done.

According to Microsoft’s own blogger Brandon LeBlanc, the reason for Linux dropping this much on the netbook market is “when they [consumers] realize their Linux-based netbook PC doesn’t deliver that same quality of experience, they get frustrated and take it back,”… Or perhaps that they are unwilling to learn how to use a new desktop environment.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft’s decision to keep Windows XP in the respirator to have an OS for netbooks has helped to polish these numbers. This since Windows Vista is way to resource-hogging for the netbooks we have today, but then they kept XP alive instead and managed to make some more money from by grabbing a share of the fast growing netbook market.

With its new Windows 7 operating system Microsoft has had netbooks in mind during the development and we’re eager to see if and/or how they will be able to satisfy netbook users with the new operating system.
