A recent survey by The British Educational Communications and Technology Association (BECTA) shows that schools in Great Britain could cut their costs on computers by half by stopping to buy software from Microsoft. BECTA never mentions Microsoft by name but you don’t really have to be a rocket scientist to do the math. In the survey they’ve compared schools that uses “paid” software with those that use free “open source” software such as the operating system Linux. The savings made in software and hardware was quite large which has to be looked upon as a setback for Microsoft.
