Micron presented the RealSSD-C300 Solid State Drive back during the fall and it talked about read speeds up to 355MB/s thanks to the SATA6Gbps support. Micron has finally launched the drive for retail, which makes it the first commercially SATA6Gbps SSD, available under the Crucial brand.

The first reviews show, without a doubt, that the SATA6Gbps truly belongs among Solid State Drives. Crucial RealSSD-C300 can reach read speeds close to 400MB/s and even if the write speed is a bit more modest at 220MB/s it is still enough to make much of the competition tremble in fear.

The performance when reading and writing 4KB files is also impressive in synthetic tests. Unfortunately the more practical benchmarks did not reflect that and it’s a bit tricky to tell how this will affect real life performance.

RealSSD-C300

IO performance wasn’t as impressive and it looks like Micron/Crucial needs to work a bit on the performance in business suits but as a retail unit RealSSD-C300 looks like an exciting addition. The fight with the new SandForce SSDs will be interesting to follow.

The drive supports TRIM and ships with 5 year warranty, which is a must though when the drive costs near 500€ for 128GB, but in raw performance it is unmatched among retail drives.

4k performance
The 4k performance is not as impressive as the reads though. I can’t wait for Intel’s 3rd generation products!
