NVIDIA’s mobile Tegra platform has started to show what it can do and there is reason for several other chip manufacturers to worry. ZiiLABS ZMS media processor boasted playback of 720p based video on a demo platform that showed promise. NVIDIA’s Tegra APX 2600 circuits looks to break ZiiLABS completely. During Mobile World Congress there was a number of Tegra-based systems on display running everything from Google Android to the popular HD playback test most media processors brags about today.

NVIDIA had a Tegra unit at the event playing 1080p video without problems and this from a device no larger than a regular portable media player. Extra impressive is that NVIDIA claims the device has a battery time of up to 10 hours, while playing a 1080p source.

They also showed how the Tegra unit could run a Quake 3 timedemo at around 25 fps, but with dual displays which of course increases the load. Not too shabby by a device of this format. NVIDIA Tegra is something we will see more of in the future, you can be certain of that.
