Small preview imageGraphics and processor manufacturer AMD has, after the launch of its new Radeon HD 4890 not talked too much about the rumors concerning a dual-GPU model based on the its new flagship. But now we’ve recieved information that many of AMD’s partners are ready to produce their own Radeon HD 4890X2  cards and it’s not really any major difference from today’s Radeon HD 4870X2, except for the power issue. AMD has increased the clock frequencies for both the GPU and the memory on the Radeon HD 4890 and when we’re talking about putting two of these circuits on the same board, we’re at the same time talking about new leves of power consumption.

BSN claims that some manufacturers will use dual 8-pin (2x150W) power connectors on their 4890X2 cards, which, together with the PCI Express interface of 75W will give a staggering maximum power output of 375W.

In other words, the video card itself may require a power supply of almost 500W and even if few Radeon HD 4890X2 card will need all this power we will probably see the numbers well over 300W, given that some partners are said to have plans of 4890X2 models featuring dual 1GHz GPU and up to 4GB GDDR5 memory …
