The large movie studios are now following Toshiba’s launch of its HD-A1 player by launching their first HD DVD movies. These are not entirely fresh though, but at least its a start. Universal has released the Sci-Fi movie Serenity on HD DVD at $35, but more are coming later on.

“Today’s disc costs $35, as will future releases: Doom and Apollo 13 on 25 April; Cinderella Man, Jarhead and Assault on Precinct 13 on 9 May; and The Chronicles of Riddick, Van Helsing, U-571 and The Bourne Supremacy on 23 May, more than a month away.”

Universal’s movies will be launched using dual-layer HD DVD discs at 30GB, but there are no details regarding the movies’ resolutions. The sound format is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 however.

Except from Universal also Warner has started to ship its first HD DVD movies: Million Dollar Baby, The Last Samurai and The Phantom of the Opera at $29 á piece.

Already a review of The Last Samurai HD DVD has surfaced where both sound and picture quality seems really impressive, as they should be.
