It wasn’t that long ago that AMD finally decided to bless the Linux users with its Catalyst Control Center. This was a seriously overdue update and when it arrived it was far from complete. Well, CCC reached version 1.0 just recently and now AMD has polished the design even further with the newest release. AMD is certainly picking up on the CCC side, but on the other hand the performance fixes have been surprisingly few lately. However, there seems that this is a positive thing. Phoronix has namely noticed a trend.

It seems that just before the Linux drivers were updated with support for the Radeon X1000 series and were improved quite a lot the last time, we had a long drought, which is just what we have been going through lately.

According to Phoronix we may be closing in on a major update that will not only add support for the HD 2000 series, but also performance improvements as soon as December this year. This would certainly be a breakthrough for ATI/AMD, a Linux driver for its latest graphics card in just six months. I’m not sure if I’m being ironic anymore, I just want good Linux drivers for my ATI graphics cards as soon as possible.
