To most people 1GB memory modules are quite big and even if 2GB modules are expected soon it’s nothing compared to what is already available on the server market. By literally stacking several memory chips they’ve been able to create 8GB memory modules which are used by servers today. This is evidently not enough, as Micron has started to tests modules with 16GB capacity. These modules uses 36x2x2Gb memory chips and is expected to arrive on the market already at the end of 2006.

If you think this sounds like an expensive trip you’re right. The cheapest 8GB modules costs about $2,000 but up to $5,000 is more than common. The 16GB modules will trump this many times over. The 72 memory chips that will be used (36 dual-chips) costs 200-300 USD á piece which land us somewhere between 14,400 USD and 21,600 USD.
