The AMD/ATI merge will bring the side effect that about 1000 people will have to leave their jobs in each company. As The Inquirer reports, it is probably jobs that are not in the technical department that are affected, since there will simply be duplicate positions after the companies have merged. Marketing, financial and management departments are the ones that presumably are going to suffer the most from the two companies blending into one, although they write that the details regarding the layoffs are somewhat unclear, but a merge causing people getting fired is hardly a surprise to anyone.
