AMD has for long been satisfied with branding its workstation and server chips with a number code after the name Opteron. Now that it has launched a new series of Opterons, Opteron x56, it has chosen to use more than just the number code. Apparently AMD is really boasting its achievement as Opteron 156, 256 and 856 all work at 3.0GHz. That 3.0GHz is an important milestone for the K8 architecture is undisputed, but will this be the the start of a new ”MHz war”, that before almost completely controlled the direction of the market? Higly unlikely as AMD’s new 3.0GHz Opterons are the last single-core models it will launch before moving the whole assortment over to dual-core and to be frank, it could’ve ended worse.
