AMD is currently using Socket AM2 as the primary platform, but in just two years there will three more processor sockets for AMD’s desktop platform. At The Inquirer they’ve published a small overview of what we can expected from AMD in the form of new processor sockets. Except from the well known Socket AM2, Socket AM2+ and Socket AM3, which all use the same physical 940 pin socket, they also have information about Cerberus. This will be AMD’s next platform, which requires a new pin layout for both processors and motherboards and will from this point on have an integrated PCIe controller.

”That brings us to Cerberus, and it’s integrated PCIe. Guess what, you need more pins for that, lots more. This means a new physical socket, and that is not compatible with AM3. Since these parts are due in late 08, that makes it the fourth new socket in 2 years. OEMs hate this.”

AMD seems to have far ahead plans for new platforms and from what it seems Socket AM3 is the last 940 pin platform on the desktop market.
