From nearly nowhere the circuit maker ARM Holdings PLC has risen to become one of the most talked about companies in the IT industry. ARM’s microprocessor architecture is spreading like wildfire on the mobile market where it first of all targets smartphones in need of power while consuming minimal energy. The success that has been over the last year or so has forced ARM to raise its expectations and aim higher, and is now in talks with semiconductor manufacturer Globalfoundries about future product manufacturing.
If we look at ARM’s plans for the near future it is clear that it aims to enter other markets and as expected netbooks, or smartbooks, are the top priority.
ARM hopes to grab at least 15 percent of the total netbook market next year and by then the market is expected to double in size and reach 37 million sold computers, which means there is a lot of money to make here.
Several companies already uses ARM’s processor architecture for their own microprocessors, including Qualcomm, Samsung, NVIDIA and Texas Instruments.
