We’re quite big fans of phase change and other kinds of exotic cooling here at NordicHardware, and even if the idea of strapping on the evaporator onto the 1.4 GHz Pentium M (Dothan) in my laptop has come across once or twice, I’ve never actually gone through with it. It seems that I don’t have to either. Embraco and Intel have namely teamed up and created something they ”External Chilled Air Docking Station.” It’s actually a miniature compressor system that cools the air flowing into the laptop using phase change technology, so it’s not exactly like, say a VapoChill, but it’s the same technology.
LegitReviews was able to snap some pictures of the new cooler and even the heart of it, the miniature compressor (at the bottom). When testing the new cooler they were able to reach a reduction of up to 40 % of the ambient temperature, comparing the temperature of the air going in with the one going out of the cooler.
This should not just make laptops run cooler, but also make more room for overclocking, which is certainly a topicality more than ever before now that Intel has launched the Core 2 Extreme X7800 for laptops.
