As you perhaps know there are several different widescreen formats, something we have discussed in previous news and articles. Most consumers don’t bother with the odder formats though, but they get in contact with them when they get black borders with their regular widescreen TV (16:9). The reason is quite simple really, most major motion pictures are produced in a wider format, which also explains why it feel wider in the theater than at home. So far we don’t really have any TVs for the ultra-wide format, but the first models looks to be coming soon.

Manufacturer Philips has announced that it will launch its first widescreen LCD TV with the 21:9 format this spring. This makes it possible for true movie lovers to experience their favorite movies at native 2.39:1 without black borders.

The problem with these TVs will instead be the more common 16:9 format, not to 4:3 format, which till stretch out far. Philips Cinema 21:9 models are without a doubt for the more demanding home cinema enthusiasts and with a size of 56″ TV it should make quite an impression.
