Sony BWU-100A is the first Blu-ray burner from Sony and the internal unit has now finally been launched on the Taiwanese market. BWU-100A can write BD discs up to 50GB at 2x speed. Except from BD media the burner can also handle DVD and CD, which makes it a real all-round solution. The only thing missing is of course support for HD DVD, although that would’ve been a huge surprise. It seems that there will only be 500 units to begin with, but due to the high price, 1006 USD, few will be complaining about the supply.
It’s the Blu-ray optics that has pushed up the price of BWU-100A, Sony has simply put PlayStation 3 ahead of the burner since they use the same laser optics.
