Western Digital has been fairly quiet lately, maybe because of all the Solid State hysteria and it lack of interest in these, but WD has now launched a new addition to the Caviar SE16 series, a 750GB model called WD Caviar SE16 750GB. The new model uses four harddrive platters sporting perpendicular recording technology at 188GB a piece. These have been paired with 16MB cache, SATA 3.0Gbps and Native Command Queuing (NCQ). Except from the massive storage capacity, the new harddrive also sports a number of new technologies for lowering noise and power consumption.

”With IntelliSeek, the actuator’s movement is controlled so the head reaches the next target sector just in time to read the next piece of information, rather than rapidly accelerating and waiting for the drive rotation to catch up. This smooth motion reduces power usage by more than 60 percent compared with standard drives, as well as quiets seek operation and lowers vibration. Lower power leads to a reduction in heat generation, resulting in greater long-term reliability.”

WD Caviar SE16 750GB is available in stores today and even if we haven’t been able to spot one in stock, many have listed it for a bit more than $200.
