Processor manufacturer AMD recently launched a new flagship for its DDR3 platform Socket AM3. Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition is the fastest processor yet from AMD, with four cores operating at 3.2GHz. As a member of AMD’s Black Edition family the processor is hot pray among overclockers with its unlocked multiplier. AMD claims to has managed to refine its 45nm manufacturing process making many hoping for new levels of overclocking.

Even if relatively few has had the time to really push Phenom II X4 955 yet impressive overclocks have already appear, where the clock frequency is getting close to 7GHz.

Currently the overclocking record is 6696MHz and this was published by Chinese overclocking team LimitTeam_Sigh. The information we have acquired is that they used liquid nitrogen to reach close to 6.7GHz on an ASUS M4A79T Deluxe motherboard, based on the AMD 790FX chipset.

The bus was operating at 223MHz and was actually running with dual memory modules, although downclocked (744MHz DDR3).

Of the relatively few extreme overclocking results we have seen with X4 955, three have reached clock frequencies over 6.6GHz with K|ngp|n with the second highest frequency of 6680MHz, also with liquid nitrogen for cooling.

We are convinced that 6.7GHz will fall very soon and AMD looks to be breaking even 7GHz in a not too distant future.
