Microsoft has developed its Xbox 360 console in a way so that it has many similarities with a PC and this includes how you connect external devices. When we first heard about an external Xbox 360 HD DVD unit that would be connected to the console through the USB interface the thoughts immediately jumped to the conclusion that there has to be a way to make it work with a regular PC, apparently more people than us realized this. Now it seems that the first successful attempt of making Xbox 360’s HD DVD work with Windows has been executed. UneasySilence has namely published an article about how they have dissected the HD DVD unit and made it play an DVD movie on a PC.
With special drivers for the unit and an HD DVD-capable version of WinDVD 8 they managed to make the external unit play HD DVD movies on the PC. If hey would be able to find a neat solution to this, which Microsoft decides not to stop, Xbox 360’s external HD DVD could become a portable HD DVD player compatible with both the video game console and PCs. All this for a price of $200, hard to beat and we will be following these experiments. There is also a thread over at AVS Forum where there is more information about the user which tried to get his Xbox 360 HD DVD unit to work with a PC.
