Small preview imageSamsung is one of the leading actors on the display market where it has delivered some trend setting models of both LCD-TV and Plasma-displays in the past. During a keynote at the annual Flat Information Display conference it has now announced that it will use a lot of what it has learned from making large displays to make small ones for portable handheld units. Samsung has several interesting goals set up for next year among others a big increase in the number of colors from today’s standard at 262 000 to 16.7 million. Also the brightness will be increased dramatically by using white pixels with the displays.

The perhaps most interesting news though is that it is planning on introducing a WVGA resolution for its cell phones. This is a widescreen resolution at a whopping 852×480 px and can be compared to today’s high end phone displays at 320×240 px. It is literally looking good for Samsung’s future cell phones and we hope to see this very, very soon.

”Joe Virginia, vice president with TFT-LCD Samsung Semiconductor, said his company is seeing a technology ripple effect that’s expected to produce thinner handsets with high-definition quality images and improved touch-responsive hybrid screens.”
