Seagate 7200.10 seems to be the name of the next desktop harddrive series from Seagaste. When we earlier reported about Seagate’s new server harddrive, Cheeta 15K.5, that used vertical storage technology (perpendicular recording) we asked when the technology would arrive for regular desktop drives. It turned out that it would only take two days before information about the desktop models. Seagate has namely published a PDF document, unofficially, that shares information about the new 7200.10 series where we find out that vertical storage technology will make it possible to reach capacities up to 750GB. An impressive increase from today’s 500GB harddrives.

Seagate is planning several big drives, but the most interesting one is without doubt the 750GB modell that will be launched in two versions, one with PATA (IDE) and the other with SATA-300. Seagate is putting a lot of pressure on the other manufacturers with its new flagships and the vertical storage technology has been more or less revolutionized.

Seagate 7200.10 750GB SATA has already been listed at computer stores costing ~$500 which is a bit more than the last flagship, Seagate 7200.9 500GB SATA which cost about $300 today, but then the price per GB is quite ok though.

Exactly when the new 7200.10 series will arrive is uncertain, but it seems that it is going to be quite soon. One thing is getting very obviuos by now though, the 1 TB disk isn’t that far off.
