If there is anything we need more it’s battery time, there is just no end to how much you can really use. One of the few things that are holding back the performance of notebooks and other home electronics or powerful tools is the capacity of modern batteries. Sony has announced it has started shipping a new kind of lithium batteries that charges extremely fast but also offers more power than competing batteries. Sony says the batteries will reach 99% charge in only 30 minutes and then four times the lifespan of other batteries on the market.

Sony has used Olivine-type Lithium Iron Phosphate to achieve higher power but since the new batteries are both wider and longer than (18mm diameter, 65mm long vs. 14.5mm/51mm for AA) than regular AA batteries we can’t use them with our regular electronics.

Whether Sony will adjust them to AA standards we don’t know, but there is no mention of it as the primary target is battery powered power tools where you seek quick recharges and high power.
