Small preview imageATI AVIVO is the name of ATi’s next generation multimedia technology that will be introduced with its new R520-architecture. Avivo is according to ATi such a big and extensive news that it doesn’t want this ”feature” forgotten behind preformance reviews and similar when the reviews of R520 appears. It has therefor chosen to introduce the technology already today before the launch of R520. We have earlier seen screenshots of soem of the features Avivo has to offer, but we knew nothing about the technology itself and how it will be implemented into ATi’s graphic cards. Now some previews of Avivo has answered some of our questions.

Except for a lot of interesting information about the handling of 2D-video such as 10-bit colors and hardware accelerated H.264 video we found this very intersting quote in Hexus very interesting article.

”Crossfire limitations? Not so much with R5, really
Poke around the web recently and you’ll get sniffs of X8-series Crossfire not doing anything over 60Hz at 1600×1200 on analogue outputs, or higher than 1920×1200 at all, because it feeds DVI output from the slave into the compositing engine on the master.
That’s pretty much correct. Crossfire with R5-series GPUs suffers no such limitation given the dual-link outputs for DVI. Enough said.”

We just get more and more excited about seeing Avivo ”in action” and considering that the technology will be available with all R5xx and RV5xx circuits it is going to be mighty interesting to see how it will work for those who wants to use them for their multimedia and HTPC capabilities.

”I’ve mentioned in public recently that R520 isn’t all about the performance. This is one of the main reasons why. The 10:10:10 output precision hints at the same buffer format being available to 3D applications for higher dynamic range rendering (2 spare bits for encoding info for other stuff like tonemappers too, remember) in R5-series GPUs. The lack of any real resolution or refresh limitation with R5-series Crossfire is not to be overlooked, either.”

We can recommend Hexus relatively easy to understand article about Avivo, while those how wants some more hardcore technical terms should venture over to Beyond3d.
