Dell continues to show its support for processor manufacturer AMD and has now launched two new server systems based on AMD’s Opteron processors. The two new servers are a part of the PowerEdge series and the flagship has been named PowerEdge 6950, which is a system with four processor sockets and targeted for the enterprise market with handling databases and other heavy applications as it’s main task, which earlier was often handled by RISC-based systems. Dell markets PE 6950 as a cheaper alternative to RISC-based servers and points out that PE 6950 can deliver market-leading price/performance. The power consumption has been reduced with 20% compared to previous 4-socket PowerEdge servers.
Dell has completed the top model with PowerEdge SC1435, which is a slim rack server with two processor sockets, where the target market is high performance clusters for smaller and mid-size companies. Also here a lot of the focus is on the price/performance ratio. Whether the systems will be able to live up to Dell’s statement remains to be seen, but it’s interesting to see a growing support for AMD from the world’s largest PC builder. A support AMD is most likely very thankful for considering Intel’s most recent rampaging with Core 2 Duo.
