AMD 4×4 will be AMD’s weapon against Intel’s coming quad-core Kentsfield. The basic idea is to simply pair two FX processors with dual cores and thus end up at the same lever as Intel’s quad-core processor. The Inquirer has now published the prices for the coming FX processors which will only be sold in pairs. The FX-70 package will cost $999 and will be clocked at 2.6GHz each, FX-72 at 2.8GHz and cost $1132 while FX-74 will cost $1500 for two 3.0GHz processors. The processors will use AMD’s server platform with 1207 pins and from what it seems you will need ECC/REG memories.

Whether AMD will actually be able to measure up to Intel’s Core architecture or not remains to be seen. Rumors says that these processors are actually nothing less than rebranded Opterons and that the motherboards will be very few, but as always it’s better to wait and see than to read too much out from these speculations.
