A while back we reported about a non-reference Radeon HD 3870X2 from PowerColor. It was shorter, but higher as the bridge chip had been moved down a bit and the two GPUs closer together. This design has reappeared now at CeBIT, but with more changes than expected. The card has GDDR4 memory chips operating at 2250 MHz, which is a lot higher than the 1800MHz GDDR3 memory the reference card has. The amount of memory is still the same though, 2x512MB. Whether this is a design that will be universally adopted, or even is the reference design, remains unclear.
