Samsung is one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers and a giant on the memory market. Now that it has launched a new series of SSDs it uses both NAND memory circuits and controller from inside the company.

Samsung 470 series uses the regular 2.5″ format where the in-house SSD controller will offer both high transfer speeds and plenty of IOPS.

Model Read speed Write speed IOPS read IOPS write
Samsung 470 256GB 250 MB/s 220 MB/s 31,000 20,500
Samsung 470 128GB 250 MB/s 220 MB/s 31,000 20,500
Samsung 470 64GB 250 MB/s 170 MB/s 31,000 11,000

The specifications show competitive transfer speeds and impressive IOPS performance, even it is still a bit short of the 50,000 IOPS that SandForce SF-1200 offers.

The SSD controller is connected to NAND memory circuits made with Samsung’s 30 nanometer technology and the power consumption is extemely low at 0.24 watt during load. With TRIM support, 1.5 million hours MTBF and an aluminum casing Samsung 470 series looks like an interesting alternative.
