LG has presented a new panel during IDF 2011, called Shurkien that will enable up to 1 hour longer battery times in notebooks. This is through a so called self-updating panel where an internal memory buffer can off-load the CPU and GPU to save considerable amounts of energy avoid loading the battery.
Intel and LG demonstrated the new panel at Intel Developer Forum to show the advantages LG Shuriken can give notebooks where every energy saving function is needed. When the computer shows a static image the display will put the CPU ang GPU in idle while the integrated memory will handle the static image, and then return to using GPU and CPU when the user becomes active again.
Intel showed how the technology could save 500mW in energy, which doesn’t sound like much, but in the long run can result in up to 40-60 minutes longer battery times in a notebook, depending on configuration of course.
LG Shuriken feels like one of many good technologies than can be used to get as much as possible from our batteries. The self-updating panel will be in notebooks in two years.
