Socket AM2 is finally here and after many months on the edge of our seats AMD has now decided to launch its new platform, where the support for DDR2-SDRAM is the big news. We’ve had a first glance at the new platform and how it performs compared to its predecessor and in the preview we publish here today we will take a closer look at the changes the AM2 platform brings in comparison to AMD’s current 939 platform, which until today has housed AMD’s best performing processors. We will focus on the support for DDR2-SDRAM with this article where we investigate what effect the varying memory speeds has on the platform’s performance and also how much the latencies matters at these high speeds. Those who wants a first peek at AMD’s new platform should check out our preview as it will be followed by many extensive reviews of everything from processorer to motherboards and RAM.

”Not only did AMD keep DDR1 alive, it was encouraging the evolution and density of DDR1. Now, however, the limitations of DDR1 were starting to show, at the same time DDR2 could now be had with fast access times and high frequencies. It was now time for AMD to enter the DDR2 market.”
