AMD recently launched its new processor platform Socket AM2 and with support for a new memory standard it was a big event for AMD. Already rumors about its next generation plattform, Socket AM3, has started to go around and this will bring yet another new memory technology, namely DDR3-SDRAM. For those who’ve invested in a Socket AM2 platform this would sound like a really low blow, but AMD has now told its OEM partners that Socket AM2 motherboards will support the coming Socket AM3 processors, Socket AM3 motherboards will not be backwards compatible though.

But the main thing is that there is an upgrade possibility and this should mean that AM3 processors will support both DDR2 and DDR3 in the integrated memory controller. A launch date for Socket AM3 is not available at this time, but should be available when the new K8L architecture is launched.
