Most enthusiast-rated coolers use a mix of aluminum and copper. The latter has head conduction but is both heavier and more expensive compared to the more convenient aluminum. Stories have been circulating that Thermalright would launch an all copper version of its Ultra-120 cooler, called True Copper, and now a picture has surfaced, and it really shows how big this beast of a cooler is.
It uses six big 6mm heatpipes that transfers the heat from the base near the processor up to the heatsink. The heatsink is just as impressive. It consists of 52 flanges made from solid copper, which is said to be a record amount with a resulting surface that is just massive.
The cooler can be combined with either one or two 120mm fans and even if we have seen even bigger coolers, this is without a doubt the heaviest. Due to the solid copper design, Thermalright Ultra-120 True Copper weighs 1.9kg (4.2 lbs), many times over what most of the high-end coolers of today weighs and more than twice as much as the sibling Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme.
The cooler fits both Intel’s Socket 775 platform and Socket AM2+, but will also work with Intel’s coming Core i7 processors with a new mounting kit. The price of the cooler is almost as high as the cooler is heavy, there have been reports of up to $110 and that is without fans.
