Ubuntu has risen to become the greatest threat of the open-source market to Microsoft’s Windows operating system. One of the driving forces behind Ubuntu,, Mark Shuttleworth, has offered his view on Microsoft’s coming operating system, Windows 7. The fact is that Shuttleworth calls Windows 7 a really good operating system and even says that he is looking forward to a good fight against Microsoft on the netbook market, where Windows Vista has been more or less invisible.

Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP has taken over on the netbook market, something Shuttleworth finds sad, especially since Microsoft has practically been giving away Windows XP licenses.

Windows 7 seems to be what most have been hoping for, what Windows Vista should have been. Shuttleworth adds that this means Ubuntu has to raise its bar even further, something it is expected to do with Ubuntu 9.04 that will arrive in May. The next groundbreaking update will be Ubuntu 9.10 in October though;

”He would not provide more details and would not elaborate on 9.10. Shuttleworth, though, has said before that the Linux desktop had to beat Apple at its own design game to see greater uptake on the desktop. That involves improvements to design, capabilities and interface, and integration with services.”
